The water level in settlements in the Kherson region began to rise rapidly due to the destruction of the Kakhovskaya HPP. An evacuation was announced in the region, but not all people were able to leave their homes on their own. This is stated in the video of the “Ukrainian witness” project. Employees of the State Emergency Service, National Police and volunteers rescued civilians throughout the night. They walked between houses up to their waists in cold water and persuaded people to leave the flooded premises. “There is a 50-year-old man with cancer in the building. We did not risk transporting him because we do not have a professional medical education. Now we will call an ambulance so that the medics can examine whether he can be transported,” said Andriy, the platoon commander of the patrol police department. He enters the yard, makes his way through the layer of water, which already reaches above his knees. A woman opens the door. This is Tamara Mykhailivna. The policeman wants to evacuate her, but she refuses: she has a sick bedridden son. Screenshot from the video From the law enforcement officer’s reaction, it becomes clear that the house stinks. Empty plastic bottles are floating in the water around the room. Residents of the flooded building are promised to evacuate them by the morning of the next day. On the way back, the policemen release the dog from the trap: it is stuck among the wooden beams of a shed or barn. However, the doctor arrives in a few minutes. The water level is already waist-deep, and in the background you can hear shelling. A doctor examines a man. He notes that the patient can be transported and evacuated. “But I won’t let him go anywhere,” says Tamara Mykhailivna. “You’ll go with him,” says the doctor flatly. The man is carried out on a stretcher, a group of policemen helps Tamara Ivanovna leave the flooded house. Next, the woman Halyna, who was sitting on the roof of her house, and her son with a dog were evacuated. The woman says that she will not go anywhere, because there is nowhere to go. However, the rescuers persuaded her to get off the roof and reach the National Police car for evacuation. The booth was almost completely flooded. The woman has only a plastic bag in her hands, the rest of the things were left in the house. “The children stayed there,” says a local resident. She means cats and dogs, the adult son explains. Galina on the roof of her own house “That’s how they lived, they didn’t touch anyone, they came…” – the man comments in despair, approaching the house. The water level continues to rise. On the roof, the rescuers find a white cat, Rosa, and a package of kittens – Vasya, Felix and Matilda. The man returns to the house to show the consequences of flooding. All the carpets are floating in the yard, in the house the view level reaches armored beds. During the rescue of another cat, the owner carefully takes out a towel from the closet, holding the rest. He wraps the cat and apologizes that they lived so poorly. He adds that in an hour the water rose from the level of the ankles to the knees. We will remind you that the Russians destroyed the Kakhovskaya HPP: water from the reservoir flooded the coastal areas below the Dnieper. Evacuation was announced in a number of settlements in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. Animal rights activists also ask not to leave the animals behind and to help them escape.
