The British band Pet Shop Boys released the song “Living In The Past” about Russian President Vladimir Putin. The clip for the song uses footage of Putin’s inauguration, the unveiling of a monument to Stalin in Volgograd, a person detained during protests, as well as marching soldiers.
In the text of the song, Putin says that he wants to be feared the same way Stalin was feared: “Like him, I will win. I will not be overshadowed. I want people to die with my name on their lips.”
In May of last year, the group published a statement on social networks about its attitude to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“In 2009, we started the Pandemonium world tour in St. Petersburg. We visited Russia many times and wrote songs with Russian themes and influences. Now it seems unthinkable that we can visit or perform there. But we look forward to the day when fascism in Russia will fall, criminal politicians will be brought to justice, the truth will be told, neighboring countries will not be threatened or invaded, and a new Russia will be born. I hope we will still be around to see it,” the musicians said in their post.
At the end of 2021, Pet Shop Boys published a post in support of the “International Memorial” and the “Memorial” human rights center, which were liquidated by a court decision.
