Employees of the Antarctic station “Akademik Vernadskyi” showed an “unusual guest”. “Look at the visitor walking next to the pier near the station. Judging by his preoccupied appearance, this penguin has a serious mission – to check whether our island is ready for the return of thousands of his relatives for the mating season,” the researchers write. They assumed that soon Ukrainian polar explorers will have many black and white neighbors – penguins. Usually for the winter, these birds leave the vicinity of the station and swim further north to open water to be able to feed on krill. “First of all, we are talking about subantarctic penguins, the most of which are on our island of Galindez. In the spring, they return here to nest,” Vernadsky’s employees clarify. Polar scientists say that this species makes a pair for life. Usually, its representatives arrive one at a time, and then search for a partner using sounds. Then they choose a place for nesting together and build a house of stones. At the same time, it is important to be the first to return, because it is an opportunity to occupy the best places even in the heights. There is less chance that the future offspring will fall asleep with snow. Previously, polar explorers showed how sea leopards hunt penguins.
