In Florida, a school principal was forced to resign because students were shown a “naked” sculpture by Michelangelo “David”. The headteacher of a conservative school, Hope Carraskilla, has resigned from her position after being given an ultimatum by the school board: either she quits or she is fired. Carrasquilla told HuffPost that school protocol required parents to be notified in a letter that students would be shown “potentially controversial” works of classical art. However, as a result of a “series of misunderstandings”, the letter was not sent to the parents of the sixth-graders before they were shown the sculpture of David. The woman explained that she has been teaching classical education for ten years and knows that from time to time there are parents who are “upset” by Renaissance art. She also wasn’t surprised by the reaction of school board chairman Republican Barney Bishop III, but was impressed that other board members agreed with him. In an interview with Slate, Barney Bishop III stated that the problem was not that the students were shown works of art from the Renaissance, but that the parents were not informed about it in advance. “We have this practice. Last year, the school sent out notices about this in advance. Parents should know that students will see, hear or talk about it in class. This year, we did not send out such notices,” said Bishop.
