Radio Liberty presented its book series in Riga

The Russian Service of Radio Liberty presented in a store in Riga Novaya Riga books from the series published by the editorial office and with the participation of the editorial office in recent years. The evening of meetings with Svobody journalists took place as part of the events that the Russian Service is holding this week in the capitals of Lithuania and Latvia, celebrating its 70th anniversary.

The new edition of “Freedom” and about “Freedom” (2019-2023) is a collection of interviews “Hunted by War” about the tragedy and fate of Ukrainian refugees, compiled from the materials of the “Humanitarian Corridor” podcast; the memoirs of one of the former heads of the RSE/RS media corporation, Jean Sosin, “Sparks of Freedom”; the collection “Russian Horror”, compiled from the memoirs of Russian emigrants who survived both revolutions of 1917 and the Civil War; the book was presented on Radio Svoboda by the writer and former head of the Russian service “The Feast of Peter Weil”. Also presented was the book “No War” published by the Tatar-Bashkir Service “Svobody” – a collection of anti-war monologues of the inhabitants of the Volga region. The book program of the Russian service and its new plans were told to the readers and friends of the editorial office by the head of the project, Radio Liberty historian Ivan Tolstoy and the poet, author of the Babylon-Moscow podcast Elena Fanailova.

The first program of the Osvobozhdenie radio station was broadcast from the studio in Munich on March 1, 1953. In 1959, the radio station changed its name. During the Cold War, Radio Liberty provided the audience in the USSR with facts of Soviet history and contemporary reality that were hidden from the public and not covered by the official mass media. In 1991, the activities of Radio Liberty in the USSR were legalized, and for 30 years the bureau of the radio station worked in Moscow. It was closed in 2022 under pressure from the Russian authorities: “Svoboda” was declared a “foreign intruder” by the Ministry of Justice, the site and accounts of the editorial office in social networks were blocked by Roskomnadzor under military censorship conditions, and dozens of editorial employees were forced to leave Russia. RCE/RS offices in Riga and Vilnius will open in early 2023.
