Ringing of pink flamingos was held for the first time in Ukraine

For the first time in Ukraine, the ringing of pink flamingos was held in Odesa region in the Tuzlivski Lymani National Park, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources reported. 18 chicks received “Ukrainian citizenship” in the form of yellow rings with numbers UA01-UA18. Ringing is a method of surveying wild birds by attaching an individual ring-shaped tag to the legs or wings. This is necessary for the study of migration, life expectancy, mortality, etc. As told in the park “Tuzlivski lymani”, this is the first time when pink flamingos lived in Ukraine from spring to autumn and brought babies.

For the first time, these birds tried to settle in Ukraine in 2017. Then the flamingos chose Lake Churyuk in the Kherson region. They brought out only three chicks, the fate of which is unknown. In April 2023, 570 adult birds appeared on the territory of the “Tuzliv estuaries”. “Ornithologists tracked the migration paths of one such beauty, recorded in the Tuzli estuaries behind a ring, and discovered interesting facts. She was ringed 22 years ago in Spain and after that periodically changed nesting places, moving between Spain, France and Turkey,” – said in the public organization “Green List”. Already in May, flamingos chose a place for nesting – the coast of the Burnas estuary near the village of Bazaryanka. However, this place proved unsuccessful due to the constant presence of children, poachers and dogs. Therefore, flamingos left all 270 nests. “But we believed that they would definitely find another place in the national park and hatch chicks this year. And so it happened. At the end of June 2023, they nested in a very interesting place in the national park – on the border of the large Tuzli estuaries of Shagana and Alibey,” – told in the national park. A total of 192 chicks were born. Currently, their age is from 40 to 55 days. “Scientists wanted to ring as many chicks as possible. Local poachers (who for some reason are not noticed by the TRO) almost foiled all plans. The shooting alarmed the colony and the adults took the chicks away from the nest three kilometers away, to the opposite shore to a sandy embankment from the sea side,” they noted. in “Green Leaf”.

The scientists managed to ring 18 chicks, which is 9% of the entire brood. “Employees of the national park chased the chicks on kayaks. Perhaps this method was used for the first time. They chased them into an ordinary trap located on the shore, made of agrofiber, stretched on stakes, with two guide wings made of a net, also stretched on stakes,” – described the process in the public organization . The scientists weighed the chicks, measured a number of parameters, took samples for parasites, ringed them and released them. The average weight of the babies was 2.4 kilograms. We will remind you that a male of a rare bird with rings on its legs was recorded earlier in the “Tuzliv estuaries”. Read also: Lonely rhinos and a parrot that does not fly.
