Same-sex couples will not be blessed in the UGCC – the head of the church

The Fiducia Supplicans declaration approved by Pope Francis, which allows same-sex couples to be blessed, has no legal force for UGCC believers.

It concerns the Latin and not the Eastern Catholic churches, said the head of the UGCC His Beatitude Metropolitan Sviatoslav.

“The declaration does not address questions of Catholic faith or morals, it does not provide any precepts of the Code of Canons for the Eastern Churches, and it does not mention Eastern Christians.” – he noted.

According to him, the concept of “blessing” in the UGCC and the Latin Church is different. In the Byzantine rite, it means approval, permission or even an order.

“It is obvious that the blessing from the priest always has an evangelistic and catechetical dimension, therefore it cannot in any way contradict the teaching of the Catholic Church about the family as a faithful, indissoluble and fruitful union of love between a man and a woman.” – the statement says.

Also, Metropolitan Sviatoslav believes that it is necessary to avoid “ambiguous gestures, statements and concepts” that “can distort or distort the word of God and the teachings of the church.”

We will remind, on December 18, Pope Francis approved the declaration “Fiducia supplicans”. It allows priests to bless same-sex couples, but not to conduct weddings or any marriage ceremonies for them.
