A new study shows that it only takes 22 people to start a colony on Mars, but with certain personality types. Live Science writes about it. The program modeled the group’s reaction to complex scenarios based on four types of personalities: pleasant – calm people who are not very competitive; social – extroverts; reactive – react situationally and try to cope with changes in the routine; neurotics are aggressive and competitive. Scientists found out that with more pleasant or sociable people, only 22 individuals could support the colony. Instead, you need to create larger groups with other types. At the same time, this study has its limitations. The model assumed that the infrastructure of the colony was already built. And the first colonizers had a reserve of energy from a mini-nuclear reactor. According to the study, there were also regular deliveries from Earth. This study raised doubts among others in the scientific community. Some are not convinced that such a number could work to create a self-sufficient civilization. “Twenty-two people are not enough to build and maintain a fully functional and autonomous colony on Mars,” says Jean-Marc Salotti, an astronautics researcher at the IMS laboratory in Bordeaux. Salotti’s earlier research found that at least 110 people were needed. He added that 22 people can survive, but they will not prosper. While taking personality types into account is quite a smart move, the issue of conflict is very important, as arguments can lead to downfall.
