Scientists have found out which three ways to quit smoking are the most effective

Scientists have found out which three ways to quit smoking are the most effective

Smoking kills about 7 million people every year. It slowly kills many organs at once: from the lungs to the liver.

However, it is possible to quit smoking. A new large-scale review of smoking cessation methods was able to identify the three most effective methods, writes Science Alert.

The research was conducted by a British team from the University of Oxford. During it, it was discovered that the drugs varenicline, cytisine, as well as electronic cigarettes are the most effective ways to get rid of the habit of smoking.

Tracked failure rates for at least 6 months. More than 157,000 smokers were included in the analysis of 319 randomized controlled trials.

Today, scientists know that nicotine is the main addictive ingredient. Data indicates that without help, only 6 out of 100 people have a chance of successfully quitting.

Cytisine and varenicline work by activating the nicotinic receptors in the brain that release dopamine when exposed to nicotine – thus preventing them from being activated by nicotine.

Scientists did not notice a noticeable difference in the drugs from cytisine of the Tabex brand, varenicline from Chantix and Champix, and nicotine electronic cigarettes. Research shows that about 14% who try to quit in this way will succeed after 6 months or more.

However, the World Health Organization has previously stated that electronic cigarettes are dangerous and harmful to health – although the degree of risk is determined by several factors. Another study found that smoke from such cigarettes immobilizes immune cells.

In addition to the above examples, scientists singled out another strategy of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) – the use of nicotine patches and chewing gum or lollipops.

“However, using one form of NRT, such as a patch or chewing gum, resulted in fewer people quitting.” – the researcher of the University of Oxford, Nicola Lindson, is experiencing.

In addition, scientists found out that a gradual reduction in nicotine consumption is slightly more effective than a sudden refusal.

Bupropion was effective in 9% of those who quit smoking. But scientists noticed a slight increase in side effects.

Like most studies, this was conducted in higher-income countries, so there is little evidence from lower-income countries. The team hopes that future research will look at how socioeconomic status affects smoking cessation.

Previously, we talked about the restoration of control over the ban on smoking in cafes, bars, restaurants and other establishments.
