Scientists have learned to determine the age of eye cells at the molecular level with the help of AI – research

Scientists have developed a new tool for determining the age of eye cells without taking tissue. This can make the treatment of ophthalmic diseases more personalized.

This is reported by Science Alert with reference to a study published in the scientific journal Cell.

A group of scientists led by researchers from Stanford University analyzed eye fluid.

About 6,000 proteins were found in it, which can be traced back to the cells. 26 of them are related to eye aging.

This was done with the help of artificial intelligence. It was trained on the eye fluid data of 46 healthy people of various ages.

In subsequent tests, the AI was able to determine a person’s age from their eye fluid to within a few years.

Then scientists found that eye diseases can accelerate the aging of cells. The analysis was carried out on the eye fluid of 62 people with various ophthalmic diseases. Certain proteins have been shown to have a higher rate of aging.

The age of eye cells in patients with early-stage diabetic retinopathy – damage to retinal cells due to reduced blood supply – was 12 years older than in healthy people.

The disease “added” almost 30 years to the eyes of patients with uveitis – inflammation of the middle membrane of the eye.

Scientists traced the affected proteins to RNA (ribonucleic acid) and isolated the cells responsible for the disease. It turned out that the treatment was not always aimed at them.

“At the molecular level, patients have different manifestations even with the same disease. With the molecular fingerprint that we have developed, it would be possible to select drugs that are suitable for an individual patient.” – says study co-author Vinit Mahajan.

This method can solve the problem of studying eye diseases, because taking tissue samples from the eye can be very harmful.

In addition, the researchers believe that their discovery can work with other types of biological fluids.

“It’s like we’re holding these living cells in our hands and looking at them through a magnifying glass.

We are getting to know our patients more closely – at the molecular level, which will enable more accurate diagnosis and more informed clinical trials.” – explains Mahajan.

We will remind you that earlier research showed that AI can be a reliable tool for diagnosing skin cancer.
