The famous Serbian writer, poet and playwright Goran Petrovich died in Belgrade at the age of 63. His death occurred on January 26, but reports about it appeared only now.
Petrovych was one of the representatives of “magical realism” – a literary trend in which everyday life gets a new, symbolic and fantastic dimension. In 1989, he published his first book of prose, “Tips for making life easier”. It was followed by the novels “Atlas Compiled by Heaven”, “Siege of the Church of the Holy Savior”, “Simultaneous Reading Sessions” and “Under the Ruined Ceiling”, as well as numerous short stories. Many of his works were adapted for theater and television.
In 2000, Petrovich became a laureate of the main literary award of Serbia – the NiN magazine award in the “novel of the year” nomination. On his account are other Serbian awards in the field of literature. Petrovich’s books have been translated into 18 languages, including Russian. He was a member of the Serbian Literary Society and the Serbian PEN Center, and in 2018 he was elected a permanent member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
