When treating depression, exercise can be critical to feeling better. Scientists compare their effectiveness with the effectiveness of therapy.

“None of these treatments is a panacea. But given how debilitating depression is, almost all patients should be offered both exercise and therapy.” – says Michael Notel, a senior lecturer at the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland in Australia.

He is one of the authors of a new study on the relationship between depression and exercise, published in the BMJ.

Michael Notel and colleagues analyzed data from 218 studies involving more than 14,000 people and concluded that walking, running, yoga, aerobic exercise and strength training in the treatment of depression have the same benefits as therapy, writes CNN.

The study proved that more physical exercises and higher training intensity have a better effect on a person’s mental health. However, scientists clarify: this does not mean that everyone needs to start training like professional athletes.

“It didn’t matter how many times a week people exercised or how long their workouts lasted. The biggest impact was the intensity of their exercise.” – say scientists.

However, they stress that even walking can improve the well-being of people with depression, as any exercise is better than none.

“At first we thought that those who were depressed needed to relax the program. But then we found that it was much better to have a clear challenge system that would at least give a little nudge.” – explains Michael Notel.

Many people find it difficult to find the motivation to exercise, and it is even more difficult to start exercising during depression.

Therefore, scientists advise such individuals to find someone who will push you to be active: join a fitness group, find a trainer or ask a loved one to go for a walk with you.

“If you take a few steps toward getting support, you’ll make it more likely that you’ll stick around.” – he said.

Whatever the physical activity (strength or cardio training, walking, yoga), it should be pleasant for a person. This will motivate her to continue her studies.

A 2015 study shows that the more pleasure a person gets from training, the more confidently he overcomes obstacles, and therefore better adheres to the regime.

“Depression affects up to 25% of people. It damages their well-being more than debt, divorce or diabetes.

Be kind to yourself, make exercise as simple and engaging as possible, and take care of your physical and mental health.” says Dr. Michael Notel.
