“Started the war as a volunteer”: the story of a guardsman who evacuated people from Buchi and Irpen

Oleksandr, an employee of the legal department and now a guardsman, went to defend the Motherland as a volunteer. Photo: National Guard Oleksandr wanted to become a soldier of the National Guard of Ukraine even in his youth. “A year later, in 1998, I served in one of the military units of NSU in Kyiv, where I became a special agent. After being demobilized, I continued my service in the Department of State Security of Ukraine and studied part-time at the Faculty of Law,” Oleksandr said. As reported in the National Guard, the man served in the Security Police for several decades and received the rank of colonel, as well as extensive professional experience. Oleksandr had to put into practice the experience of protecting people during a full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation. “Yes, the situations were different every day, but the work was familiar to me and my colleagues. At that time, we didn’t think much about our own safety, the main thing was to get women, children, and the elderly out of the combat zone first of all,” the soldier recalls. One of those whom Oleksandr saved was his 94-year-old friend, who worked as a sniper in World War II. The man stayed in the guard’s apartment for several days, and then he was taken to his daughter. When the Russian troops retreated from the outskirts of the capital, Oleksandr and his comrades came as volunteers to one of the Territorial Centers for recruitment and social support of the Kyiv region. As the defender recalls, in one of the villages, which “was more like a big menagerie, where domestic animals frightened by the explosions were walking freely without supervision and looking for their owners”, an elderly woman approached them. “She and her loved ones spent the whole night in the cellar under fire and with tears in her eyes begged for help. The special forces, having received permission, evacuated people to one of the railway stations that were in operation to transport them to a safe place,” the National Guard said. In the breaks between rotations, Oleksandr and his comrades created a charity fund, with the help of which they collect funds to provide the special forces units of the National Guard with SUVs, generators, freeze-dried food, military equipment and other things needed at the front. “For the personal courage and selfless actions shown in the defense of the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, Oleksandr and his comrades were awarded the Order of Courage III degree,” the National Guard added.
