Stephen King’s novel “Fairy Tale”, which was not officially published in Russia, appeared on marketplaces. The book was published by the “Trofeynaya kniga” publishing house in Luhansk. “Kommersant” writes about it.
According to the newspaper, for example, you can buy the book at the Russian sites “Yula” and “Avito” at a price of up to two and a half thousand rubles per copy.
The former copyright holder of King’s publication in Russia, the company “Exmo-AST”, cannot fight for the removal of the novel from the platforms, since the writer suspended cooperation an hour ago due to Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
It was not possible to find official data about the Kommersant publishing house in Luhansk. The newspaper also clarifies that the book was released without an international standard book number ISBN. It is mandatory for the output data of books that are officially distributed.
You can also find Joan K. Rowling’s novel “Inky Black Heart” on marketplaces. The book about the detective Cormoran Strike was published in August last year and was also not officially published in Russia.
In a conversation with journalists, Yula, a private advertising service, noted that the company cannot independently take actions to protect copyright. However, the copyright holder may submit a request to remove the ad. Avito reported that the content can be removed from the platform after a reasoned appeal by the copyright holder.
- After the start of Russia’s war with Ukraine, many foreign writers, including Stephen King and Joan K. Rowling, stopped working with Russian publishing houses under new contracts. In February, it became known that the publishing houses “Eksmo-AST” and Smart Reading, in order to bypass the sanctions, will start publishing summars – retellings without direct citation – of foreign works prohibited for sale in Russia. Publishers in this case rely on the law on citation.
