The “20 days in Mariupol” awards will be returned to the international broadcast of “Oscar”

The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will add “20 days in Mariupol” to the licensed recording of the Oscar ceremony. The presentation of the statuette for the Best Documentary Film will be edited into the international 90-minute version, informs Deadline.

Earlier, Suspilne, which owns the rights to broadcast the award, was outraged by Disney’s decision to cut the “Best Feature Documentary” nomination from the recording, in which the Ukrainian film won.

In Ukraine, the live broadcast of the “Oscar” began at 1:00 a.m. Kyiv time, and ended around 4:20 a.m. Therefore, a large number of Ukrainian viewers could not watch the award ceremony. “Suspilne” planned to rebroadcast the 90-minute version on Monday evening, but it turned out that the fragments with the award and Chernov’s speech were missing.

The director of the film is at the ceremony Mstislav Chernov delivered a speech in which he drew the attention of those present at the Oscars and the audience of the film award to the atrocities of the Russians taking place in Ukraine.

Executive producer of “Social Culture” Lukyan Halikin emphasized that last year the abbreviated version was awarded the “Best Documentary” nomination. Then the film about the “good Russian” won Oleksiy Navalnyshe also competed with the Ukrainian film ““House of Chips” about children from Lysychansk.

“Here’s a straight fact: that year’s Documentary category was included in the 90-minute international version, as was Yulia Navalny’s political speech. I don’t really believe that Disney is planning a 90-minute version without taking into account the predictions of the winners – it doesn’t sound convincing for a high-rated show“, said Galkin.

The awarding of the film “20 Days in Mariupol” was not included in the abbreviated international television version of the “Oscar” ceremony. It lasts 90 minutes – certain categories and parts of the show could not be included due to time constraints. Disney Entertainment explained that the selection of nominations for the shortened version was determined several weeks ago during the planning process for the broadcast of the ceremony.

“I wish I had never made this film, never appeared on this stage, and I wish Russia had not attacked Ukraine. If I could exchange the award for Russia not to occupy our cities, not to kill tens of thousands of my compatriots…”, director Mstislav Chernov addressed the audience from the stage.

The documentary film was edited on the basis of materials that Chernov and a team of Associated Press photojournalists took in Mariupol besieged by the Russians and sent to the world media, telling about the terrible events in the city: the deaths of children and adults, the creation of mass graves, the maternity hospital destroyed by a Russian aerial bomb, and other Russian military events crimes

The tape became the highest-grossing documentary film in Ukraine last year – it collected UAH 500,000 in the first weekend of release alone.
