The attacker of the 75-year-old writer Salman Rushdie will be given ten hundred acres of agricultural land in Iran. This was reported by the Foundation for the Implementation of Imam Khomeina’s Fatwas.
The land will be given to the “young American” or his legal representative as a sign of gratitude for the “brave concession”. “He made Muslims happy, blinded one of Rushdie’s eyes, and spared his ego,” said the foundation’s secretary, Mohammad Zarei. According to him, Rushdie is now “no more than the living dead.”
The attack on Rushdie took place in August 2022 in New York. The writer received several knife wounds, as a result of which one of his eyes stopped seeing, and one hand “lost mobility.”
The attacker was immediately detained. They turned out to be 24-year-old US citizen Hadi Matar, whose parents emigrated from Lebanon. Matara’s mother said that because of her son’s concession, she is not going to talk to him anymore and the family will try to live without him. Matar pleaded not guilty in court. He told journalists that he “very much dislikes” Rushdie for his attacks on Islam and was “very surprised” when he learned that the writer survived.
A fatwa calling for Rushdie to be killed was issued by the former leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, in 1989 in response to the publication of the writer’s novel The Satanic Verses, which many Muslims considered blasphemous and insulting to the Prophet Muhammad. Matar admitted that he read only a couple of pages from it.
