“The brother I was saving saved my leg, but mine was cut off”: the story of a fighter from the Rivne region

31-year-old Volodymyr Rudkovsky from the Rivne region was injured in the Zaporozhye region while rescuing a wounded comrade.
He jokingly notes that his brother’s limb was saved, but he had to have it amputated. His story was told in the First Medical Association of Lviv.
Before the full-scale invasion, Volodymyr was engaged in charity work and popularization of sports, and also worked in the press service of the Sarna City Council.
Despite active volunteering, the man decided that this was not enough to bring victory closer, so he applied to the Military Committee.

Volodymyr says that he must complete the work of his ancestors: “All I could think about was that it was a historic battle. We have been at war with them not for 100, not for 200, but for 300 years. And if God so wants me to die in this great struggle, I will die with honor“.
Shortly before going to the front, the man became a father for the first time, but saw his daughter only through the smartphone screen.
Before the next assault on the Zaporozhye direction, the wife wrote that she was worried about Volodymyr, because their daughter had been crying all night.
“My Rada sleeps well at night and she didn’t cry at night. And that night she was hysterical until 4 in the morning. I didn’t understand what was happening with the child. And at some point I wrote to Volodya”– says the defender’s wife.

A few hours later, her husband was injured while rescuing his brother.
“I looked down and saw that there were no fingers. I thought – wow! Cool! Probably, there will be a prosthesis. But somehow the situation turned interestingly, that my brother, whom I was saving, had his leg saved, but mine was cut off. It happens”– Volodymyr talks about the injuries with humor.
The fighter had to undergo reamputation (repeated amputation), and then start prosthetics.

“During the first days of rehabilitation, my day was scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. And in two weeks I felt like I had two legs“, Volodymyr says.
He is also supported by his wife and little daughter, who temporarily moved to Lviv to be closer to their defender.
