A residential building in Kyiv, located at the intersection of Sofiyska and Volodymyrska 20/21 streets, with the hotel and restaurant “Davnya Rus” was added to the List of Cultural Heritage Sites.
This was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration.
“The building has preserved its authenticity and is an important element of the formation of the historical and architectural environment of Sophia of Kyiv – a UNESCO monument. In addition, the building is an interesting example of a combination of residential and non-residential functions in a low-rise building.” – say the KMDA.
As reported by the Cultural Heritage Protection Department of the KMDA, the relevant order was signed on July 6, 2023, on behalf of Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klychko.

Previously, the Ministry of Culture did not enter this building into the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine. However, Vitaliy Klitschko instructed the Department of Cultural Heritage Protection of the KMDA to prepare documents for the protection status of the monument.
On June 19, 2023, a petition appeared on the website of the KMDA, with the demand to give the house built in 1870 the status of a historical monument, as well as to initiate its removal from the current owner for improper maintenance and its return to the city community.
The authors of the petition claim that it was from the balcony of this building that the Chairman of the Central Council of the Ukrainian People’s Republic Mykhailo Hrushevskyi announced the Act of Unification of the People’s Republic of Ukraine and the People’s Republic of Ukraine.
Vitaliy Klitschko says that, according to the experts of the Museum of the History of the City of Kyiv, there is no evidence of Mykhailo Hrushevsky’s performance on the balcony of this particular building in the available historical sources.
“But the building, together with the preserved buildings of Sofia Square, make up a complete ensemble of this historical place, where Ukraine’s independence was proclaimed.” Klitschko noted.
Earlier, public activists claimed that they wanted to build an office center on the site of the building.
Currently, according to the mayor of Kyiv, no construction equipment has been found at the site, and no work is being done there.
