The Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine plans to start construction of the National Military Memorial Cemetery (NVMK) at the end of November. It should be created in the Gatnensk community near Kyiv, said First Deputy Minister of Veteran Affairs Oleksandr Porhun during a telethon on September 11. “The technical and documentary work has begun. We have received a number of technical conditions for the design of the National Military Memorial Cemetery. We plan to start the construction itself at the end of November, and hand over the first phase, so that we can carry out the burial of our fallen heroes, by the end of 2023,” he said he. At first, they wanted to place it in the Lysa Gora tract, but activists and the government opposed it. In March 2023, the Ministry of Veterans Affairs and the Ministry of Culture proposed the creation of a National Military Memorial Cemetery near the Bykivnian Graves Reserve in Kyiv. However, in August, the “Bykivnyanskii Mogili” nature reserve announced that it is impossible to build the NVMK in the Bykivnyanskii forest in a short time, because there may still be old burials there. Then the location was re-selected: the Cabinet of Ministers approved the implementation of the NVMK project in the Gatne community near Kyiv until August 2025.
