On January 31, Ukraine returned 207 defenders from Russian captivity – defenders of Mariupol and Kherson, fighters from Zmiiny Island, marines and combat medics.

Junior sergeant Zakhar, whose family was killed during a rocket attack on a high-rise building in Dnipro, was among those freed, the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said.

Zakhar and his wife Tetiana were defenders of Mariupol. In May 2022, after the evacuation from Azovstal, they were captured by the Russians together.

In less than half a year, Tetyana managed to exchange and returned to Ukraine. The defender settled in Dnipro together with her two daughters.

The medics who saved fellow citizens and civilians at the Mariupol Metallurgical Plant and Azovstal were also returned to Ukraine.
