Previously, the film was included in the qualifying lists of contenders for the Oscar in the nominations “Best Documentary” and “The best foreign film”.

“20 days in Mariupol” – a documentary tape created on the basis of materials shot by war correspondent, photographer, videographer Mstislav Chernov in Mariupol besieged by the Russians.

The tape consists of footage that Chernov and a team of Associated Press photojournalists sent to the world media, telling about the events in Mariupol: the deaths of children and adults, the creation of mass graves, the maternity hospital destroyed by a Russian aerial bomb, and other Russian war crimes.

In 2022, a film from Ukraine won the American Film Academy Award “Klondike” directed by Maryna Er Horbach. Marina Er Horbach’s film was included in the longlist of nominees for the Oscar 2023, but did not go further.

This drama tells the story of a family that found itself at the epicenter of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crash, which was shot down by pro-Russian separatists from a Russian Buk installation on July 17, 2014, near the village of Hrabov in the Donetsk region. Irka and Tolik are expecting their first child and do not want to evacuate even after the wreckage of the downed Boeing.

“20 days in Mariupol” at international awards

On January 12, 2024, Mstislav Chernov was nominated for the American Directors Guild DGA Awards 2024. He was honored for directing the documentary “20 Days in Mariupol.”

Previously, American film critics had already celebrated the film at the end of 2023. Then the documentary was included in the list of the five best documentaries of the year.

On September 18, 2023, the Ukrainian Oscar Committee chose a documentary film-testimony “20 days in Mariupol” director Mstislav Chernov to represent Ukraine at the 96th Academy Award “Oscar”. In December, the film was added to the qualifying list of films accepted for consideration at the 96th Academy Awards.

The tape also received a number of nominations and awards at world film festivals. Premium Cinema Eye Awards “20 days in Mariupol” was nominated for achievements in non-fiction and documentary films and TV series in several categories: “Best Documentary”, “Best Editing”, “Best Production”, “Best Debut” and “Audience Award”.
