The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Opill, the first over-the-counter birth control pill. The pills are expected to appear in stores and online stores in the United States as early as 2024, according to The New York Times. Opill pills contain only one hormone – progestin. The administration notes that the medication will become the most effective over-the-counter method of contraception. It is noted that pills will be more effective, in particular, than condoms. Daily oral contraception is safe and is expected to be more effective than currently available over-the-counter contraceptive methods for preventing unwanted pregnancy,” said Patricia Cavazzoni, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. It is noted that during the study of the drug, in which 995 women participated, only six became pregnant. The manufacturing company said that Opill will most likely appear on the US market in early 2024. The company did not disclose the cost of the drug. As a reminder, the drug “Postinor” for emergency contraception will not be excluded from the list of prescription drugs in Ukraine.
