In Ukraine, a helicopter was lifted into the sky to save a 15-year-old boy from the Mykolaiv region. A helicopter delivered a donor heart from Vinnytsia to the Heart Institute in Kyiv. Aeromedical evacuation of the organ was carried out for the first time during the full-scale war in Ukraine, the Ministry of Health reports. The patient’s name is Maxim. He is from Vradiivka, in the Mykolaiv region. “In February, the boy contracted COVID and he started having heart problems. Doctors diagnosed dilated cardiomyopathy (myocardial disease and problems with the ventricles). The disease is incurable. The only way out is a transplant,” the department emphasized. 15-year-old Maxim. Photo: Ministry of Health. The teenager spent a month in intensive care. The boy’s life was saved by the relatives of the deceased 40-year-old woman, who consented to organ removal. She was diagnosed with brain death due to a ruptured aneurysm.. “This decision of her family made it possible to save the lives of four people. Among them is Maxim,” the Ministry of Health writes. However, the removed heart can “live” for only a few hours, and it still had to be transported, prepared for surgery and transplanted into the patient. Due to the state of war in Ukraine, doctors only carry out field transplants, and the boy’s condition did not allow him to be transported, so the doctors decided to involve aeromedical evacuation. While Maksym was being transplanted with a heart, three patients were being transplanted with other organs in two hospitals: the kidneys of a 16-year-old teenager from Poltava region; the liver of a 46-year-old woman from Kyiv; second kidney to a 22-year-old man.
