“The house shook twice”: an eyewitness to the tragedy in Uman told about the rocket attack

Zhanna Klymenko is a resident of the 9-story micro-district in Uman, which was hit by a Russian missile on April 28. Her house shook twice: shells hit the back and side of the building. All the apartments near her entrance had their windows blown out. The woman told “Ukrainian Pravda. Life” about the morning of the tragedy, which took the lives of 23 people, six of them children. “We slept soundly, no one expected anything. There was an air raid alarm that we did not hear. Let’s be honest: we are already used to air raid alarms. At 4 in the morning, my sister who lives nearby called me. She said that a rocket had arrived, and that you need to wake up and move to a safe place,” Zhanna says. As a result of the missile hitting the 9-story house, “it shook so that it was very scary,” the woman recalls. She realized that danger was very close, and asked her husband to collect the documents quickly. But the couple had only managed to get out of bed when a second, stronger explosion rang out. “I ran out of the house in my pajamas, and my husband in a bathrobe. When we were going down the stairs from the 5th floor, we already saw that there were no windows in our entrance. It was not yet clear where and what hit,” the woman says. Immediately after that, Zhanna called her sister, and the two families went to their parents outside the city. Already being in a safer place, women and their husbands began to look at photos of eyewitnesses from the scene of the tragedy on social networks. “It became clear that the rocket landed behind our house. And in front of our house there was a direct hit on another 9-story building where my aunt lives. That is, it hit the back and side of our house,” the Umanchan woman continues. Then Zhanna’s husband, her father and her sister’s husband returned to the scene of the tragedy to find her aunt and her husband under the rubble. The rescuers allowed them to join the search party. The woman arrived after the alarm was over. “What I saw could not be imagined even in a terrible dream. Half of the house is gone, people are lying in bags on the side. Because the whole entrance was like a house of cards. I saw my aunt’s husband in the crowd. I ran up to him: he was in a state of shock, he was pulled out from under the rubble. That morning, my uncle was going to work: he went out of the bedroom to the kitchen, to the only room that survived. There he was met by a rocket,” Zhanna says with a hint of sadness in her voice.
