The language ombudsman asks Warner Bros. Discovery to make a Ukrainian-language audio track

The Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language Taras Kremin appealed to Warner Bros. Discovery with a request to create a Ukrainian-language audio track for the company’s TV channels broadcast in Ukraine.

This applies to the Discovery Channel, CNN, Eurosport, Animal Planet and the Science Channel, it says messages language ombudsman.

Currently, these channels in Ukraine are broadcast in Russian.

“We are sure that the introduction of the Ukrainian language on the specified channels will contribute not only to ensuring the rights of Ukrainian citizens to access information in their native language, but also to expanding the audience, increasing the ratings of your channels and giving them competitive advantages on the Ukrainian market.” – wrote Taras Kremin in a letter to the company’s president, David Zaslav.

He also appealed to the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine and the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting regarding the need for negotiations with international foreign media companies on the creation of a Ukrainian-language audio series.

As the Commissioner noted, he received complaints from Ukrainians about showing TV channels with Russian translation. In particular, we are talking about Eurosport (France), AMC (Czech Republic), History HD (Germany), Viasat (Estonia), etc.

At the same time, the law “On Media” does not prohibit providers from showing foreign channels with Russian dubbing. In each of the service packages, the share of TV channels in the national language should be at least 60% of the total number. From April 1, it will decrease to 30%.

We will remind, the company Disney Entertainment cut out awarding of the film “20 days in Mariupol” from the abbreviated international television version of the “Oscar” ceremony.

However, later the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences reportedthat the presentation of the statuette for the Best Documentary Film will be included in the international 90-minute version of the award.
