The language ombudsman called on TV channels to stop the practice of bilingualism

Taras Kremin, the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, appealed to national broadcasters to stop using bilingualism on the air.
This was reported in the Office of the Language Ombudsman.
In particular, Kremin appealed to the TV channels Rada, Channel 24, Channel 5, Pryamiy, Espresso, We are Ukraine, the National Public Television and Radio Company of Ukraine and the media groups 1+1 Media, Starlight Media “, “Inter Media Group”.
The language ombudsman emphasizes the use of only the Ukrainian language or the dubbing, dubbing, or translation into Ukrainian of the remarks of program participants who speak Russian.

The Commissioner reminded of the decision of the Constitutional Court of July 14, 2021, according to which the use of bilingualism in public space not only violates the rights of Ukrainians to information in the state language, but also “causes the external narrowing of the space for the use of the Ukrainian language, undermines its very system from within, distorts its structure, creates the ground for its internal decomposition, causing its decline.”
“Currently, the current legislation of Ukraine allows the use of a non-state language in the live telecast of Ukrainian-language programs. But, taking into account the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, the historic decision of the Constitutional Court, as well as the importance of realizing the rights of Ukrainian citizens to receive information in the state language, I suggest to TV channels not to wait for July 2024 , to use exclusively the Ukrainian language in their broadcasts”, – says Taras Kremin.
The language ombudsman also reminded that from January 1, 2024, national TV channels must broadcast programs and films in the state language for at least 90% of the total airtime between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
And from July 7, 2024, in Ukrainian-language programs, it will be possible to use other languages without dubbing or dubbing only in constant expressions, short phrases and individual words.
