The commissioner for the protection of the state language received complaints about violations of the language law in two medical institutions of the country. This was reported by language ombudsman Taras Kremin. The applicants complained that in some medical institutions, documents regarding the health status of patients are provided in a non-state language. “In particular, in one of them, it was stated that the staff, providing services, can communicate in a non-state language, and information for general familiarization is partially provided in a non-state language,” says Taras Kremin. The Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language” provides: the language in the field of health care, medical assistance and medical services is the state language; at the request of a person requesting medical assistance or medical care services, his personal service may also be provided in another language acceptable to the parties; health care institutions draw up documents related to patients’ health status in the state language; the language of acts regulating the activities of health care institutions, record keeping and document management is the state language; health care institutions use medical terminology in their documents in accordance with the standards defined by the National Commission for State Language Standards.
