The majority of Ukrainians communicate in Ukrainian at home: survey about the language

In Ukraine 59% surveyed respondents speak Ukrainian at home, and 28% speak both Ukrainian and Russian.

At the same time, only 12% of Ukrainians communicate in everyday life only in Russian, and only 1% of respondents speak another foreign language.

This is stated in a study conducted by the Sociological Group “Rating” on the order of the International Republican Institute (IRI).

Among those who speak only Ukrainian, 9% purposefully switched to it only recently. And the majority (91%) have been communicating in Ukrainian for a long time.

We will remind you that in 2022, the “Rating” survey showed that 18% of Ukrainians speak Russian at home, and only Ukrainian – 48%. That is, the number of fully Ukrainian-speaking people in everyday life has increased over the past 2 years.

The situation in the regions

Respondents in western Ukraine speak Ukrainian the most – 93%. Among the interviewees from the central part of Ukraine, the number of Ukrainian speakers also prevails (67%), and the share of bilinguals is 25%.

Among respondents from the south, the share of bilingual people is 46%, and 31% of people mainly use Ukrainian at home.

In the east, the share of bilingual people prevails (51%), and only Ukrainian is spoken at home by 23% of respondents.

The lowest rate of Russian-speaking people in the West is only 1%. At the same time, among respondents from the east, the share of Russian speakers is the highest among other groups – 25%.

Poll February 17-21, 2024 conducted by the Sociological Group “Rating” on the order of the Center for Analysis and Sociological Research of the International Republican Institute throughout Ukraine (except the occupied territories of Crimea and Donbas).

2 thousand residents of Ukraine aged 18+ took part in it. The error of representativeness of the study with a confidence probability of 0.95 does not exceed ±3.5 percentage points for the full sample. The respondents’ reach rate is 14%.
