The Russian Ministry of Culture did not renew the contract with the artistic director of the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater in St. Petersburg, Andrey Moguchi. The term of the agreement ended on April 9.
The Ministry of Culture also approved the theater’s new charter, according to which the director will be in charge. This post is occupied by Tatiana Arkhipova. She will continue to work, the ministry noted.
Andrey Moguchy is an honored artist of the Russian Federation. He has been the artistic director of the Tovstonogov Theater since 2013. During his work, he staged several plays, including “Alice” based on Lewis Carroll, “What to do” based on the novel by Nikolai Chernyshevsky, “The Thunderstorm” based on the play by Alexander Ostrovsky, several episodes of “Three Fat Men” based on the works of Yuri Olesha, “Mother’s Heart” ” based on Vasyly Shukshin’s stories.
Moguchy repeatedly received the “Golden Mask” theater award as the best director. In 2021, he was awarded the medal of distinction “For services to St. Petersburg”.
In February of last year, Andrey Moguchy joined the appeal of cultural and artistic figures calling for an end to Russia’s war with Ukraine. The appeal was published on Facebook by the then director of the State Theater of Nations, Maria Revyakina. The post has now been deleted. Revyakina left her post at the end of January after 10 years of directing the theater.
