“The most difficult thing is the sorting of fighters”: how medics take out the wounded from near Bakhmut

The evacuation department of the medical company 5 of the OSHB takes the soldiers wounded near Bakhmut to hospitals, where they are given assistance. The company’s work is told in the video of the “Ukrainian witness” project. Fighters who have already been given first aid enter the evacuation department of the medical company. They usually apply a tourniquet or give a painkiller tablet. This is done by combat medics, but in some situations, the fighters themselves and their comrades. Serhiy Shpychka, the head of the evacuation department of the 5th OSH medical company, was an anesthesiologist before the war and managed three resuscitation departments. Before the full-scale invasion, he headed the resuscitation department of the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv. Since 2014, he has been a nachmed of one of the battalions of the Armed Forces. According to Serhiy Shpychka, the main task of the evacuation department of the hospital is to enable the doctors to do their work at the next stages. Before taking the injured person to a hospital or hospital, his condition is stabilized. There are also stabilization points in certain areas of the front. Very often the wounded have to be led under fire. It also happens that up to thirty fighters are brought from the battlefield at once. “If the “three hundredth” appears (wounded, – ed.), then he must remain the only “three hundredth”. There is no task to take him out of the battlefield immediately, this is done only under safe conditions, because safety is the most important thing,” – says Serhii Shpychka. “If the “three hundredth” appears, then he has to be the only “three hundredth” and stay. Medic admits that the most difficult part of the job is to deal with the “sorting” of fighters. “It’s difficult when several dozen fighters come in at once, that happened. In such cases, you should engage in “medical triage” – decide who should be helped first. You look at the wounded man – yes, he is light, he will wait. And you postpone the other one, because he has very little chance, and if we do not help the one who has a chance, then we will lose both. It’s a very difficult choice, it’s difficult to balance after that,” says the head of the department. “It’s difficult when several dozen fighters advance at once, this happened.” There are also stabilization points on certain areas of the front. “When there is an assault – by our military or the enemy, then there are always wounded. It is extremely difficult to get them from the battlefield to the hospital quickly, so stabilization points are created for this. Here we stabilize the condition of the three hundred: we remove the tourniquets, stop the bleeding, etc. From here we send to the hospital of the second line of evacuation,” says the resident of the evacuation department of the medical company with the call sign Beagle.
