The most interesting series of April – what is worth watching

Probably British “Gentlemen” everyone has already watched it, but we cannot miss them and do not give recommendations for those random lucky people who for some reason did not watch this series, and it awaits them like a dessert. American-Chinese “The Three-Body Problem” – also from the category of understandable advice, because it is widely advertised, although it will not have 100% positive feedback from viewers.

But the American one “The Hunt for the Killer” and too Swedish “Veronica” – these are the top series of the month, the best in their genres, and therefore the joy of their fans. Plus we also give Spanish and Australian samples of serial production. As promised: we continue to represent the world in one collection!

Guy Ritchie’s Instant Product Bonus – Fun of the Month! Because the director has so deliciously prepared a new dish (an 8-episode series) from already known ingredients (the film of the same name) that you won’t remember who has ever done it.

It is precisely the combination of storylines and dramatic situations. The new hero, a soldier straight from the war zone, returns home to bury his father and unexpectedly inherits the title of duke, the hatred of an older brother ignored in the will, as well as his 8 million debt and an even bigger mess in the form of a marijuana factory under land on the territory of his house. The newly minted duke is trying to solve financial problems and get rid of “tenants” with the fantastic pronunciation of a refined aristocrat and the ability to kill, while not retching at the sight of many corpses.

This plot features various servants with a double bottom, funny relatives, ruthless thieves, powerful businessmen, perverted dukes, female psychopaths and many more charismatic and bright characters.

Red Queen (Reina Roja)

The first four episodes in this 8-episode thriller capture the viewer’s attention as much as possible. And although the attack then slows down the pace a bit, the audience will have time to get high from the tactical and strategic moves of the plot, which clearly show that the powder in the “…queen’s” powder keg has a literary origin.

The series is an adaptation of the first novel in a trilogy by one of the most popular modern Spanish writers, Juan Gómez-Jurado, and its main character is Antonia Scott, a girl with autism and IQ in 242 points. This fact is not only used by the police to investigate the abduction of children of the rich, it is also significantly reproduced with the use of impressive special effects: Antonia sees the information as a lace of threads, portraits, things scattered in the space of her fantasy. She is helped by an ambivalent assistant, fat and gay Jon Gutierrez, and together they become almost the most charming pair of modern detectives.

A bit of Silence of the Lambs, a bit of military PTSD, car racing and running around Madrid.

Furies of Paris (Furies)

The small rating of the series (6.2) undeservedly neglects the very unique “picture” of the sophisticated criminal world of Paris. According to the good rules of the comic, this world is headed by the eight “godfathers” of the mafia, where every aspect of criminal activity – be it the sale of drugs and weapons, or prostitution and pickpocketing – is controlled by one of the charismatic bosses. And next to them there is a defender and liquidator of all dangers – the deadly Fury, whose position is transmitted only through the female line, from mother to daughter. The daughter of a mafia “accountant” who was killed by an unknown sniper becomes a tangent to all this, and with each of her touches, the foundations of the secret world of Paris crumble before our eyes.

The plot earthquake and rockfall are interesting to watch, just like in the game. Moreover, the cunning of the screenwriters’ thinking is equal to the high class of action directors, and the action scenes deserve comparisons with the famous “Raids” and “Johnny Wick”. The roles are just as skillfully played, whether it is Marina Fois (“22 Bullets”), Mathieu Kassovitz (“Amelie”) or Lina El Arabi (“Family Business”).

It’s worth watching.

Veronica (Veronika)

The main character, a policewoman, begins to see the ghosts of the dead at the moment when she runs out of pills prescribed to her since childhood after the death of her father. What are the pills for? How did her father die? And how to turn what she saw into practical evidence?…

The curiosity of unraveling the riddles arises immediately, but the creators drag the cat by the tail for three long series to finally accelerate to full speed in the fourth, and keep it that way until the finale. The series is one of those when you have to wait to get cinematic pleasure, although you don’t really want to watch even one series. The reward will come with time. And it’s worth it.

Here, the mystique does not overflow, relying mainly on the heroine’s feelings, supplemented by her detective’s police flair. The problem, as always happens with people who see more than others, lies in the disbelief of others, and sometimes in fear. The heroine is convinced of her mental instability, is fed with pills and locked up in an insane asylum, while adding: “This is for your own good“. In the final, her partner says: just don’t tell anyone what you saw.

The Hunt for the Killer (Manhunt)

Unlike the films “Lincoln” or “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”, the 7-episode series is about the hunt for the killers of the 16th US president himself, who was shot in 1885 in a Washington theater by an actor of the same theater and a supporter of the Confederacy, John Wilkes Booth. .

At the same time, we are shown the America of that time in all its everyday and socio-political details, with flashbacks moving back in time to Lincoln’s assassination. The Southern states, despite losing the civil war to the Northern states, still dream of bringing back slavery. Their network of supporters and agents is everywhere. The new president becomes a vice president with the last name Johnson (a historical symbol, because after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, a vice president with the last name Johnson became president).

“Hunt for the killer”, as a historical detective based on real events, gives the viewer a detailed and beautifully drawn picture of the second half XIX centenary, for which we owe, separately, the showrunner and screenwriter Monika Beletsky, who is associated with the brilliant TV series “Fargo” and “Abandoned”.

The three-body problem (Three–Body Problem)

The obscure bestseller, the book of the same name by a Chinese fiction writer, has acquired its second serial incarnation. After the 30-episode series in 2023, we now have an 8-episode co-production. And this is a completely different kind of material.

The producers of “Game of Thrones” David Benioff and D. B. Weiss approached the matter in a modern way, and did not make a literal adaptation, but a “cinematic one”, reducing and trimming the number of characters, scientific disputes, huge monologues of the main character, a Chinese scientist who first started to communicate with aliens; number of levels in a computer game that aliens have developed to find ways to save their civilization, which is destroyed every time by the forces of their three suns.

The protagonist, a nanomaterials scientist, was made a woman, a lesbian. Added other heroes. They downplayed the responsibility of ecoactivists in their desire to destroy all of humanity. And most importantly, they made a screen adaptation not only of the first book of the trilogy, but also of the second one. As a whole, eight series look more slender and clearer implementation of a really new idea about extraterrestrials.

Population – 11 residents (Population 11)

A young man comes from the USA to Australia in search of his father. As he says. But just at that moment, the father disappears. The problem is especially complicated due to the equation, the solution of which can lead to the discovery of the missing person, because all its components are unknown: each of the 11 inhabitants of the Australian micro-village is not at all what it seems at first glance. One turns out to be a former murderer who has served 25 years. Another one bakes pies from dead animals knocked down at night on the highway. One couple of elderly people are swingers and throw parties while high on cattle tranquilizers. And the hero is being hunted by an unknown killer, in between “work” making a cake for his daughter’s eighth birthday.

The 12 series of the series (the number 12 is crossed out in its title) is a constant discovery of something that was hidden by the characters and now becomes clear. And this is obviously funny and shocking. Therefore, being a black comedy, “Population…” does not cause laughter, but, rather, a crooked ironic smile due to the observation of people’s eccentricities.

For lovers of non-obvious plot and obviously great soundtracks.
