The Pinakothek der Moderne museum in Munich fired a maintenance worker after it was discovered that the man had hung one of his own paintings in part of the gallery. He placed it in the modern art section, next to the works of the pop art artist Andy Warhol.

About this informs The Guardian.

As the publication notes, the incident happened on February 23, but it was announced only on Monday, April 8.

A 51-year-old employee brought his works to the museum “in the hope of an artistic breakthrough”. He had access to the exhibition after hours, so he did not attract the attention of the guards. After that, he installed a canvas measuring 60 by 120 centimeters on a blank white wall in the corridor on the first floor of the east wing gallery.

The employee considers himself an artist and most likely viewed his role on the museum’s technical services team as a part-time job to support his true calling“, the representative of the museum said.

The picture was installed early in the morning, and it was noticed after the opening of the museum. Due to the flow of visitors, the employees decided to leave it until the end of the working day. Therefore, the work of the technician was hanging until 18:00.

The Pinakothek der Moderne said it would not comment on the details and style of the painting because it might “encourage copycat pranksters”. The man has already been released and banned from entering the territory of the museum.

All I can say is that we have not received any positive feedback from gallery visitors about this painting“, said the press secretary of the institution.

The police were also involved in the investigation due to intentional damage to property – in order to hang his painting, the employee allegedly drilled two holes in the wall of the gallery.
