A court in Iran handed down a death sentence to the murderer of the famous Iranian film director Dariush Mehrjua and his wife. Three of his accomplices received terms from eight to 36 years in prison, and they will also be subjected to flogging and fined. The names of the defendants are not mentioned.
Mehrjuy and his wife Vahide Mohammadifar were killed on October 14, 2023 in their own home in Tehran. Multiple stab wounds were found on their bodies. Soon, four people were detained on suspicion of murder.
Dariush Mehrjui was one of the founders of the new wave of Iranian cinematography in the 60s. His films have been awarded a number of international prizes. Vahide Mohammadifar also worked in the field of cinematography, was a screenwriter and costume designer.
The director repeatedly spoke out against state censorship in Iran, spoke in support of Mahsa Amina, who died in 2022 after being detained by the religious police. Because of this, there were speculations that the murder of Mehrdzhua could have been political. However, the BBC reports that the killer was previously an employee of Merdzhua and had a conflict with him regarding payment for his services.
