After replacing the Soviet coat of arms with a Ukrainian trident on the “Motherland” monument, the Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War plans to remove from the territory of the complex all symbols that broadcast imperial narratives. This was reported by the press service of the institution. “Does the museum plan any more transformations of the Memorial Complex after replacing the symbols on the sculpture? Yes, of course. We are planning changes, and there are a lot of them. Dismantling the Soviet symbols is only one, albeit very important, stage of the transformation and redefinition of the entire museum. So to speak, its the visual part,” the museum said. They also noted that they plan to change the name and sculptures, update the structure of the museum, and open new exhibition areas. “Among the grandiose plans is to remove all the symbols that broadcast imperial narratives and turn the complex into a museum of Ukrainian memory and victory,” the museum officials added. Work on the dismantling of the Soviet coat of arms on the “Motherland” monument began on July 30. According to the former head of the MKIP Oleksandr Tkachenko, work on the project to replace the coat of arms began as early as 2022. At that time, 85% of respondents supported the replacement of the coat of arms of the USSR with the Ukrainian trident. On August 1, the Soviet coat of arms from the “Motherland” monument was completely dismantled. On August 6, a Ukrainian trident was installed on the shield of the “Motherland” instead of the dismantled coat of arms of the USSR.
