Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences announced the list nominees for the “Oscar” award in 10 Kartegories. American TV presenter Jimmy Kimmel will announce the winners at the 95th ceremony, which will take place on March 12 in Los Angeles.
Among the nominees are at least two works related to Russia. In the “Best Documentary” category, the film “Navalny” by the Canadian director Daniel Roer is presented. It tells about the poisoning of the politician, his return to Russia and his subsequent arrest. The premiere of the film took place on the American CNN channel in April 2022.
Competitors of the film about the Russian opposition in this category will be Shaunak Sen’s “All That Breathes” (about brothers who take care of wounded birds), Laura Poitras’ “All Beauty and Bloodshed” (about the famous photographer and activist Nan Goldin), Sara Dosa’s “Fire love” (about the married couple of volcanologists Kate and Maurice Krafftach, who died during the eruption) and Simon Lehreng Wilmont’s film “House of Chips” (about a children’s orphanage in the east of Ukraine).
Among the other nominated films about Russia is the film “Exit” by Yakut directors Maksym and Evgenia Arbugayev. It is presented in the “Best Short Documentary” category. The picture tells about the life of biologist Maksym Chakilev, who comes to Chukotka every year to study the mass migration of walruses.
In the “Best Motion Picture” nomination this year, ten films are presented, instead of five, as before. These are “On the Western Front Without Change”, “Avatar: The Path of Water”, “Banshee Inysherina”, “Elvis”, “Everything Everywhere and Immediately”, “Fablemen”, “Tar”, “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Triangle of Sorrow ” and “Women speak.
