A petition to the president with the demand to preserve Ukrainian dubbing for foreign films has gained the necessary number of votes – it was signed by more than 25 thousand people. Read UP.Kultura in Telegram The petition was created on the website of the head of state on July 4, its author is Pavlo Skorokhodko, an actor and dubbing director, the official voice of Harry Potter. This is a response to the draft law No. 9432 “On the use of the English language in Ukraine” submitted by the President to the Verkhovna Rada. “In Ukraine, dubbing has long become a separate cultural phenomenon and part of the cultural heritage. Its cancellation, however gradual, will inevitably lead to a significant decrease in the popularity of the Ukrainian language, since it was dubbing that at one time contributed to its significant popularization,” the petition says. The author urges President Volodymyr Zelenskyi “not to destroy cinema dubbing, but to increase the number of screenings in the original language with Ukrainian subtitles, in order to leave the potential viewer the right to choose in which language to watch movies.” On June 28, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy submitted a draft law to the parliament, with which he proposed to consolidate the status of English as one of the languages of international communication in our country. One of the norms of the draft law provides for the refusal of dubbing of films in Ukrainian cinemas and screenings in the original language. This proposal caused discussions in the Ukrainian segment of the Network.
