A petition on the president’s website in support of the draft law on registered partnerships, in particular for same-sex couples, received the required 25,000 votes. Now Volodymyr Zelenskyy must consider it. The authors of the petition ask for the adoption of draft law No. 9103 “On the Institute of Registered Partnerships” submitted to the parliament by People’s Deputy Inna Sovsun. “Couples who do not want or cannot formalize marriage are not able to obtain the same rights as married ones. In particular, this applies to same-sex couples, including LGBT+ military couples,” the petition states. According to the authors of the petition, currently same-sex partners cannot make decisions about the treatment of their loved one, and if he died, they cannot dispose of his body, receive an inheritance under preferential conditions or receive social protection, as is provided for families of military personnel or victims of war. The authors of the petition call on President Volodymyr Zelenskyi to publicly support the draft law and ask the parliament to adopt it. It will be recalled that People’s Deputy Inna Sovsun submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law on civil partnerships that would allow same-sex marriages to be registered. The Parliamentary Committee on Youth and Sports supported this draft law and recommended it for adoption by the Verkhovna Rada in the first reading. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine did not support the draft law, stating that some of its provisions contradict the Constitution, and also reported that the department does not have data on the number of LGBT representatives in the Armed Forces.
