A petition calling for the transfer of the Church of St. Nicholas in Kyiv to the religious community of the Roman Catholic Church received 25,000 votes, necessary for consideration by the Cabinet of Ministers.
The petition is published on the website of the Cabinet of Ministers.
“Church of St. Nicholas in Kyiv – the only neo-Gothic building in the capital, the creation of the famous architect Horodetskyi. In Soviet times, the church was taken from the Catholics by the Bolsheviks, and during independent Ukraine it was never returned to its owners – religious community“, the text of the petition reads.
The author of the petition, religious scholar Lyudmila Filipovych, emphasizes that the condition of the building is deteriorating, especially after the fire of 2021.
In order to restore the architectural monument, the religious organization of the Roman Catholic Church and the Ministry of Culture signed a memorandum in 2021, in which they agreed that the Ministry of Culture will “facilitate the transfer” of the church to the permanent use of the religious community after the completion of emergency works, but no later than June 1, 2022 .
However, the terms of the Memorandum were not respected, and its validity period expired on November 5, 2023, the text of the petition states.
In September 2020, the Cabinet of Ministers ordered the Ministry of Culture to transfer the building of the Church of St. Nicholas to the RCC religious organization for permanent free use. However, the terms of the order were not fulfilled either.
The petition asks for strict implementation of the government order and handing over the church to the Roman Catholic Church.
We will remind, on June 1, 2022, a solemn service was held in the church, it was attended by the former Minister of Culture and Information Policy Oleksandr Tkachenko, who promised to hand over the church to the Catholic community.
