The professor of the Department of Oriental Languages of KNU is accused of misappropriating the translation of a collection of poems

Ivan Bondarenko, professor of the Department of Languages and Literatures of the Far East and Southeast Asia of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Ukraine, is accused of violating the copyright of the translation. Hanna Wozniuk, a former graduate student of the Institute of Philology, announced this on Facebook. According to Hanna, she has been translating a collection of poems by the Japanese poet Yosano Akiko for 8 years. Her scientific supervisor was Professor Ivan Bondarenko. The woman says that she planned to publish her work, but her mentor preceded her – he released a collection under his own name. “In 2021, I joyfully shared on Facebook the news that after almost 8 years of painstaking work, I finished the first Ukrainian translation of the collection of 399 poems of the tank “Tousled Hair” by the Japanese poet Yosano Akiko. This work formed the basis of my PhD thesis (the work is freely available online), which I defended in the same year 2021. I was preparing the collection for publication, but the war happened,” the woman said. The cover of the collection of poems On September 13, its former academic supervisor Professor Bondarenko Ivan Petrovych presented his translation of the same collection to the department. Hanna notes that she discussed with her mentor her plans to publish her work, but she still wanted to improve the translation. “Ivan Petrovich, using my translation and comments on the poems as a contractor, decided to do it faster, not considering it necessary to mention my name even in passing. I cannot describe how impressed I am by the act of a person whom I considered my mentor. This translation has it means a lot to me as my first real job as a translator. It means a lot to my family who have followed the process from the beginning and supported me along the way. So I don’t want to be silent about this situation and I want to give it publicity at least among colleagues,” emphasizes the translator. The Department of Languages and Literatures of the Far East and Southeast Asia expressed its position regarding accusations of plagiarism against Professor Bondarenko. In the appeal, the employees of the department claim that the professor had allegedly translated these poems earlier, referring to the 2016 collection “The Thirst for Love”, which contained more than 100 poems by Yosano Akiko. “Some colleagues of our department, who were once students of Mr. Bondarenko, perfectly remember how he declared in pairs from Japanese literature the originals and his translations of poems by classical and modern authors. So it is not surprising that Ivan Petrovych returned to the original material with which previously worked, and finished what he started by publishing an updated collection of poetry by Yosano Akiko,” the statement said. They also accused the former graduate student that “she didn’t even try to understand” and said that the translations of the poems seem to differ both stylistically and tonally. Instead, Anna was supported by her colleagues. In particular, translator Tetyana Bondarchuk noted: “I know what it’s like to be left alone with a system where there is a word from a professor with a name and a word from a graduate student unknown to anyone. The situation is a stalemate. That’s why, in principle, it arose. Here I I remember the situation that Tyra described when she was in captivity. The person who interrogated her asked if she understood why he was doing this. To which Tyra replied: “because you can.” At the same time, a scientist and coordinator of the anti-plagiarism platform of the Dysergate initiative ” Svitlana Vovk reacted to the support of Bondarenko by the staff of the department. “…The toxic network within the entire department was self-exposed. As it turned out, they haven’t heard and don’t know what academic integrity is, nor about the types of violations,” Vovk believes.
