The science fiction magazine Clarkesworld has suspended the acceptance of applications for the publication of stories due to an influx of pitches written by artificial intelligence.
In February, the journal rejected more than 500 applications and banned their “authors”. Their number began to grow after the developers of ChatGPT provided wide access to the chatbot. ChatGPT, the number of users of which is estimated at one hundred million, can write code, poems and even scientific papers.
According to the editor of the magazine, Neil Clark, the possibility of paid publication of the story – the magazine pays 12 cents per word – attracted the attention of those who want to get rich quick using artificial intelligence.
Clarke added that he spoke with other publishers and found out that the situation at Clarkesworld is not unique. Clarke suggests that the journal will resume accepting applications next month, but will soon stop again until the editors find a solution.
