The sculpture “Confident”: how it appeared in Stryi Park and what it really means

[ad_1]

The installation of sculptures in Lviv’s Stryi Park, which were created as part of one of the oldest and most consistent Ukrainian sculptural projects, the Kaniv Sculpture Symposium by the creative association “ChervoneChorne”, caused quite a discussion on the network. Especially the sculpture “Confident” by the sculptor Vasyl Korchovy. Read UP.Kultura in Telegram This initiative belongs to the co-founder of the creative association “Chervone Chorne” and the sponsor of the project, Yuriy Stashkiv. The impetus for the project in Stryi Park was the war, or rather the impossibility of continuing the symposium in its usual format and the actual freezing of the project. The symposium hosted Ukrainian and foreign stone sculptors every year for 10 years, thanks to which a sculpture park was formed in Kanev, which is remarkable in terms of its size and quality of works, which is an important tourist point for both local residents and visitors from other regions. Surprisingly, with the beginning of the war, the number of visitors to the park increased. As Yuriy Stashkiv notes: “People come here very often now to see the sculptures. We didn’t have such attendance before the war. It’s a psychological rest. They feel that they can get something important for them from the stone, from the sculpture, everyone finds something of their own. This in a certain way affects the way a person vibrates, is psychologically attuned.” The site of the Kaniv International Sculptural Symposium. The project was supported by the Lviv City Council, the Lviv Regional Council with the assistance of the curator Pavlo Gudimov (Y Gallery art center). It is important to note that some of the most powerful sculptors were invited to participate in the symposium, who were selected as the founders of the association, as well as the famous Ukrainian sculptor Oleksandr Dyachenko and the artist Oleksandr Babak, as well as representatives of culture such as the architect Slava Balbek joined the process in different years. curator of Yorkshire Sculpture Park Helen Pheby, curators who work with sculpture – Pavlo Gudimov, Kateryna Pidgayna, Kateryna Rai and others. By the way, Oleksandr Dyachenko is the ideological inspiration of the sculptural symposium, the park houses a significant collection of his sculptures. Oleksandr works most often with stones. He believes that since sculpture lives the longest of the arts, negative energy cannot be transmitted through it – this is a taboo that Dyachenko set for himself. Oleksandr Dyachenko. Discussions resumed after its installation in Stryi Park. Although sculptors of a similar skill level in Ukraine can be counted on the fingers of one hand, for many in Lviv the author and his sculpture became a real discovery, for some it was unpleasant. The main criticism was the woman’s nudity and curvaceous forms. Is it relevant to condemn nudity in sculpture in the 21st century? Probably so, if we missed the art history of the last twenty centuries or so. Do the body proportions of “Confident” deserve criticism? Yes, if you consider 90/60/90 to be the only “correct” proportions. Photo: Oleksandr Avremchuk The very concept of proportion in art is about harmony and balance, adequacy of ratios. And from a technical point of view, there is also the stability of the sculpture, its resistance to external factors. A conscious change of proportions in order to achieve an artistic goal and to evoke a certain emotion in the viewer requires considerable experience, skill and courage from the author. Vasyl Korchovy masterfully copes with these tasks, and each of his sculptures is like a test of his own skill: is it possible to extract an even more complex form from stone this time. And he always passes this test with success. By the way, work on sculptures within the framework of the Kaniv Sculpture Symposium lasts a month. Vasyl Korchova managed to make “Confident” in two weeks thanks to his experience and exemplary professional discipline. As the master himself says, he is used to criticism in his direction, but remains true to himself and his creative vision: “It is such a difficult path – to break stereotypes. But as Mahatma Gandhi said, first they laugh at you. Then they fight with you. And then you win.” . I am now between the first and the second.” A total of eight sculptures are presented in Stryi Park. The audience will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the work of the famous Japanese sculptor Yoshin Ogata, the titans of Ukrainian sculpture Oleksandr Dyachenko and Oleg Kapustyak, one of the most promising sculptors of the new generation Vitalii Protoseni, and the experienced stone sculptor from Bulgaria Zdravka Zdravkov.
