Eight-year-old shepherd Baghira, who was rescued by caring people after the explosion of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, found new owners. Now she lives in the Mykolaiv region.

This was reported by the “Berserk” Animal Rescue Federation.

In the comment for “UP. Life” Federation founder Lyudmila Melnikova said that the dog was rescued in June 2023 in Kherson. She stayed in the cold water for more than a day, swimming on boards.

“Before the tragedy, Baghira lived on a chain. When the dam was blown up, a neighbor let her go so she could escape. This saved her – otherwise she would have died.” – said Lyudmila.

When Baghira got to the veterinary clinic, she was diagnosed with a spinal hernia.

“Because of her, she could not walk. We were offered a complex operation, but we refused.

They also discovered a tumor in the ear. The biopsy confirmed that it was not malignant, so we have already cured it.” – says the head of the Federation of Animal Rescue.

A long path of treatment and rehabilitation awaited the shepherd. Qualified specialists helped her in this. According to Ms. Lyudmila, the animal was prescribed a course of massage and exercises that would help her hind legs to work as before.

Three months later, rehabilitators managed to cure Baghira and she started walking at the end of September last year.

“In addition, she needed diet food: she could only eat frozen veal and special food.

We followed all the doctor’s recommendations, so now the dog is in good condition.” – Lyudmila Melnikova said.

The animals were looking for new owners for a long time. There were even offers to take her abroad (to Switzerland). However, after weighing all the pros and cons, they decided to leave the four-legged friend in Ukraine.

“Baghira with a peculiar character. We were looking for non-poor people who would be able to provide her with comfortable living conditions, because keeping such a dog is hard on the pocket.

They wanted her to live in a country house, because she needs space and the absence of other animals. We warned those willing that she should be the only favorite in the family.” – explained Melnikova.

The woman says that Baghira now lives in the Mykolayiv region – in a family of farmers. As soon as the animal was brought and taken out of the cage, it began to lick the hands of the new owner.

“The new family takes care of her like a child. We are in touch with them, they consult with us about nutrition and care for her.

They are together all the time. Bagheera understands that she has a master, it is very important for a dog to have someone close to her.” – Ms. Lyudmila shared.

Before the tragedy, Baghira had a different name – Jessie. She was renamed because after the rescue, the dog seemed to be “born a second time”, she became a symbol of the fact that life wins, says Lyudmila Melnikova.

“Despite the fact that people have caused her a lot of damage, the dog still loves them. Baghira is a symbol of unconditional love and the victory of life over death.” – says the founder of the “Berserk” Animal Rescue Federation.

Earlier we talked about why dogs should not be kept on a chain.
