At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, enemy ammunition arrived at the house of 63-year-old Natalia Apolkova from the city of Rubizhne in Luhansk region. It broke directly above the woman’s head. She was thrown back by the blast wave, and the debris cut her entire upper body.

Since then, with the help of doctors, Mrs. Natalia has been trying to restore her face and body, which were injured by the war.

Nataliya Apolkova is originally from Khmelnytskyi, but spent almost all her life in Rubizhny, where she moved after marriage. There, the woman was caught in a full-scale invasion. Later, enemy ammunition flew into her house.

“I was literally choking on my own blood, and my hand was barely holding on to my skin.”, – Mrs. Natalia shares painful memories.

Under heavy enemy fire, a seriously wounded woman was taken out of the city to the front line by volunteers. The woman recalls: on the second day, in the hospital mirror, she saw what the occupiers had done to her face.

“I looked at myself and didn’t want to look anymore. I even forbade my grandchildren to visit me. Because they were still small, and I was in a terrible state. This is very difficult to see”says the woman.

The doctors performed all the necessary operations on her and even managed to save her arm. They also operated on the face – performed an intervention to restore the jaw. After that, Mrs. Natalya was already able to look at herself in the mirror and spend time with her grandchildren. But she wanted to “return her beauty”.

Almost two years have passed since the injury. According to doctors, the woman’s body was still scarred, including a deformed nose and jaw, the inability to insert teeth, a crooked face and a lack of sensation in his right side.

However, Natalia Apolkova will soon undergo a series of complex reconstructive operations to restore her nose and jaw.
