The traditions of giving are widespread throughout Ukraine, but each region has its own rites, celebrations and traditional cuisine. The Generous Evening is also celebrated in the Ukrainian diaspora abroad.

The celebration of the Generous Evening or the Malanka holiday takes place on December 31 in the form of “New Year’s parades”. On this day, it is customary to prepare 12 ritual dishes, to give generously and to “lead a goat”. It also became an important part of the celebration “Schedrik” Mykola Leontovich.

The tradition of generosity is alive: it has passed difficult tests in our history and has been preserved thanks to its bearers, thanks to those who popularized it at different times. At the same time, we have thousands of examples when national cultural heritage inspired artists to create modern works with ethnic motifs. One of the brightest such manifestations is “Shchedryk” by Mykola Leontovich“, said the Acting Minister of Culture Rostislav Karandeev.

The ceremonial song “Shchedryk” by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych is also planned to be included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Our goal is to prove to the world that the melody “Carol of the Bells” actually has a purely Ukrainian “citizenship”. According to UNESCO rules, one of the requirements for the inclusion of an element in the World List is its inclusion in the national list of objects of intangible cultural heritage, so today’s event is an important step towards world recognition“, said the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Emine Japarova.

In addition to the “Traditions of the Generous Evening”, the list of intangible heritage already includes a number of elements related to New Year’s celebrations, in particular:

  • Traditional rite of Malanka village. Beleluya, Ivano-Frankivsk region,
  • The tradition of congratulating the Vasyls in the village of Lypivka, Rohatyn territorial community, Ivano-Frankivsk region,
  • Creation of a three-dimensional spherical Christmas star of the village of Matskovichi.
