During March 21-24, 2024, one of the important book events will take place in Germany – Leipzig Book Fair. Ukraine also opens its stand on it with the slogan “The fragility of existence”, informs Ukrainian Book Institute (UIK).

During Russia’s genocidal war against Ukraine, it is imperative to tell the world about us, particularly about our culture and literature. Thanks to the joint efforts of our partners, new books by Ukrainian publishers will be presented at the Leipzig Book Fair, and the voices of people who create modern Ukrainian culture will be heard at panel discussions“, — shared director of the Ukrainian Book Institute Oleksandra Koval.

At the national stand, 11 publishing houses with 150 titles will be presented: Chas Zmin Inform, Chas Masters, the German-Ukrainian magazine Gel[:b]lau, Belka, Samit-knyga, ACCA, Stary Lev Publishing House, Nash Format, Vilnyi Viter, Umbrella and the Better Time Stories project.

Publications of military writers who died at the front will also be presented. Books are among them Maksym Kryvtsova, Andrii Gudyma and Hleba Babich. This year, the organizers provided free booth space for Ukraine, as well as provided all the necessary equipment.

There will also be a special literary Ukrainian program “Ukrainian Stories of Resistance and Identity”, which is presented by the Goethe-Institut in Ukraine together with the National Cultural and Art and Museum Complex “Art Arsenal” in partnership with the Ukrainian Book Institute and the Ukrainian Institute.

In total, the program includes 28 events with the participation of Ukrainian and foreign writers, literary experts, and journalists. The events will be held at the national stand of Ukraine, hall 4, D307 and in the “Europe” cafe, hall 4, E403/E401. You can familiarize yourself with the entire program by link

In the comment for UP. Culture director of the Art Arsenal Olesya Ostrovska-Lyuta said that at such events, foreigners rediscover the identity of Ukrainians.

People in other countries should finally get to know Ukraine for real, and we should stop being a “hidden people” about whom little is known. For example, it is precisely this lack of knowledge that is associated with the illusion that we often find in the European media, as if the Ukrainian identity was strengthened because of the war. It does not“, the director emphasized.

She also added that the goal of the Art Arsenal was to bring the voice of Ukrainians to the international arena. Now, in her opinion, it is important to delve into what our culture, traditions and values are.

Our identity is as strong as ever. But in many European countries, this identity is discovered for themselves. And we have to help with this: tell, explain, discuss. This is precisely what programs such as the one that we are presenting in Leipzig in invaluable partnership with the Goethe Institute in Ukraine are for.Olesya Ostrovska-Lyuta added
