According to the United Nations, 2023 has become the deadliest year for migrants in the last 10 years.
8,565 deaths were recorded on migration routes, it is said in the report.
“The number of dead in 2023 has tragically increased by 20% compared to 2022. This highlights the urgent need for action to prevent further loss of life.” – report to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The IOM explained that due to the lack of migration regulation at the state and global levels, migrants often choose dangerous routes to move.
So, for example, in 2023, at least 3,129 people died in the Mediterranean Sea. They tried to reach Europe from Africa. This number of deaths is the highest on this route since 2017.
In Africa, 1866 people died trying to cross the Sahara desert or overcome the sea route to the Canary Islands of Spain.
In Asia, 2,138 people died, most of them Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar and Afghan refugees.
More than half of the migrants who died in 2023 drowned. 9% of deaths were caused by traffic accidents, and 7% by violence.
IOM added that since the beginning of 2024, 512 migrants have already died.
