In France, a case was opened against a French writer Frederick Bagbeder on rape charges. Because of this, on Tuesday, December 12, he was arrested for several hours.

Begbeder was detained by police in Pau after he arrived for questioning in a preliminary investigation into the alleged rape on Tuesday morning, FranceBleu reported.

Prosecutor Rodolphe Jarry confirmed the information about the investigation into the writer. “At this stage, the preliminary investigation must continue“, he noted and added that the presumption of innocence still applies to Begbeder.

The prosecutor’s office clarified that a young woman submitted an application for the writer in the summer of 2023. She claims that last summer in a hotel room, she had one consensual sexual contact with Begbeder, and later the second, but already without consent.

The writer denied the accusations against him during the interrogation. He was detained for several hours and released. After that, Begbeder released an official statement in a sarcastic tone.

Thanks to the staff of Po Police Station for welcoming me into their premises. Two caveats, though: the curry chicken was dry, and …there sure isn’t enough parking in front of the police station“, Begbeder wrote.

This is not the first case against the notorious writer. In 2008, he was arrested for using and possessing cocaine.

Support of Ukraine

The French writer visited Ukraine several times: he came to present his books and was a DJ at parties. In 2007, Begbeder presented to Ukrainian readers in Kyiv his Russian translation of the novel “Ideal”, in which the main character comes to Russia to look for a new face for an advertising campaign.

In 2016, Begbeder came to the presentation of the first Ukrainian translations of his four novels: “99 Francs”, “Love Lives Three Years”, “Conversations of the Descendant of the Era” and “Una and Salinger”. All four books were translated by the writer and translator Leonid Kononovych.

Also in the same year, it was Begbeder who was the star guest of the 23rd Forum of Publishers in Lviv.

After the start of the full-scale invasion of Russia on February 24, 2022, the writer supported Ukraine. “Dear Ukrainians! Three days ago I thought Zelensky was a clown, but now I know he has the biggest balls in the universe“, he said then.

Begbeder also called on the Russians to stop the war against Ukraine: “Please, right now – resist! Say what you feel. Stop this crazy dictator. You cannot remain silent. You are not allowed to do this now – keep silent!

This year, the writer participated in the collection of funds for the needs of the Armed Forces in Mykolaiv. He attended a charity dinner of the Way of Peace Foundation in Paris, where an auction was held with exclusive lots, which were provided by both famous Ukrainians and representatives of other countries as a sign of support for Ukraine.
