Scientists have established that there is an inverse relationship between cell size and their number. That is, there are more smaller cells than large ones. In addition, the sum of large and small cells is the same. This is stated in the study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, writes Science News. Ian Gatton, an ecologist at McGill University in Montreal, noted that the relationship between size and quantity goes by many names. For example, in ecology, this is the “Sheldon spectrum”, named after the scientist who discovered that each class of plankton on a logarithmic scale has the same total mass of organisms. And even if the number of individuals decreases, their weight increases – the total mass remains constant. A mathematical regularity in the English language is named after the linguist George Zipf. However, an enormous amount of data was required to detect this pattern in human cells. Independent researcher Jeffrey Shander first began collecting this data more than a decade ago. He got most of his data from the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), which had performed autopsies on countless dead men and weighed their organs to build a human reference model. In all, the researchers collected data from more than 1,500 sources to show that the cells of a typical man, woman, and child exhibit an inverse size-number pattern. Scientists claim that an adult man consists of an average of 36 trillion cells. The average woman has 28 trillion cells, and a 10-year-old child has 17 trillion cells. Scientists also found out that a person’s health can depend on the number of cells of a certain type. For example, if the total number of lymphocytes in the body was greatly underestimated, then the immunity may not protect against some diseases (for example, leukemia and HIV). Ian Gatton added that the number of cells is determined by cell division. If this process breaks down, it can lead to cancer. Therefore, according to scientists, this knowledge can also explain anomalies in the human body.
