They took tissue from the cheek: a boy with a congenital defect of the palate was operated on in Lviv

In Lviv, doctors operated on 17-year-old Artem from Kyiv, who had a congenital defect of the hard palate.
Lviv Regional Children’s Hospital “Okhmatdyt” informs about this.
The patient had a congenital disease – a complex cleft palate. The defect was spoiling Artyom’s quality of life, so surgical intervention was necessary.
The first operation, which was to eliminate the lip defect, was performed on the boy at the age of 3 months. By the age of 10, he had a soft palate defect closed. With solid everything was more difficult.

Artem’s family had consultations with maxillofacial surgeons all over Ukraine. But each operation made the next more difficult: the scars became coarser, so it was difficult to take tissue to correct the defect that remained.
“I was always looking for help for my son. We have been registered all our lives. Surgeons from Kharkiv and Kyiv advised to turn to Turkish doctors. We were in Turkey, my son was operated on in Poland, but there was no result, no one managed to completely close the defect in the palate.” – said the boy’s mother.
During the operation, the surgeons proposed to correct the defect using a piece of tissue on the stem of the tongue using the Vuerrero-Santos technique. Its essence is that the patch is sewn in the area of the defect, the tongue is pulled up and fixed with stitches. However, this could make eating and speaking difficult. Therefore, Artem and his mother did not dare to intervene.
“We decided to look for more options and found a solution in Lviv. We got a consultation and here we offered a new solution that suited our son and me perfectly.”– added the patient’s mother.
Doctor-surgeon Khrystyna Pogranichna explains that in order to close the defect, tissue was taken from the boy’s cheek.
“We took a fragment of tissue on a vascular pedicle from his cheek – an arterialized flap. This is a fragment of the facial artery, which will feed the area of the palate,” – says Pogranichna.
Surgeon Roman Ogonovskyi says that enough tissue was needed to completely cover the defect.
“The defect was significant, so there is not enough tissue of the palate. A fragment from the cheek allowed us to completely close it. Microvascular surgery solves such a problem.”– said Ogonovskyi.
The operation was successful. Doctors closed the connection between the oral and nasal cavities. The tissue taken from the cheek has taken root, everything has healed, the blood in the palate circulates well. Artem has already been discharged home.
It will be recalled that earlier it was written how surgeons from the USA restore the faces of Ukrainian fighters.
