Two Ukrainian films have been nominated for the European Film Academy Award

The nominees for this year’s European Film Academy Award have been announced – European Film Awards 2023. Among them are two Ukrainian tapes.
This was announced by the European Film Academy on its official website.
Post-Soviet noir detective “La Palisade” directed by Filip Sotnichenko was nominated for an award in the category “Opening of the year – FIPRESCI prize”. He will compete for the victory with five more films.
The first Ukrainian film to be nominated in this category of the European Film Awards was “Tribe” by Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi. Last year, the drama “Pamfir” by Dmytro Suholytky-Sobchuk and the co-production film “The Censor” directed by Peter Kerekesh were among the nominees in this category.

“La Palisade” is Sotnichenko’s full-length debut. The tape tells about two friends – a police detective and a forensic psychiatrist – who are investigating the murder of their colleague. The events take place in Ukraine in 1996, a few months before the signing of Protocol No. 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which provided for the abolition of the death penalty.
The world premiere of the film took place at the Rotterdam Film Festival. There, the tape was presented in the main competition and received the FIPRESCI award.
Another film that was among the nominees of the European Film Awards 2023 is “Home” directed by Hanna Badziaka and Alexander Michalkovich. This tape is a joint production of Sweden, Ukraine and Norway. It was nominated in the “Best Documentary” category.
Badziaka and Michalkovic’s work tells the story of the 2020 protests in Belarus and explores the culture of violence and abuse in the Belarusian military that is creating a traumatized generation. The main character of the tape is a woman Svitlana, her son Nikita was found hanged in a military unit two years ago.

The film “Fatherland” was included in the program of this year’s Odesa Film Festival, which was held in Chernivtsi.
Director Alexander Mikhalkovich made his debut in a full-length documentary film in 2019 with the film about the annexed Crimea “My Grandmother from Mars”.
The European Film Awards (The European Film Awards) is an annual award given to the best European films. This year, the award ceremony will take place on December 9 in Berlin.
